“At my home in El Rodeo, I was with Soledad. By the end of my first meal, it was clear to me that she was my mother-figure while I was there. I wanted to learn about the culture from her. As we had our early discussions outside — and late night conversations on the couch inside — I felt more comfortable with her as I do with many others who I have spent much more time with. I will forever have ingrained the experience of her sitting on the arm of the couch that I was sitting on, her playing with my hair (something I’m not fond of most people doing) as we managed to find a way to understand each other.”
